Restoring Local Woodlands: Community Action for Native Habitat Health In-Person

Join Shedd Aquarium’s Conservation Action Team for an inspiring evening presentation on our woodland restoration work happening right here in your own backyard, including work at Bob Mann Woods and other locations. In partnership with the Forest Preserves of Cook County, volunteers are making a powerful difference for native plants and wildlife through hands-on action.

Using hand tools, we cut and burn invasive buckthorn, a non-native shrub that aggressively outcompetes native flora for sunlight, space, and nutrients. These efforts help restore balance to the ecosystem and create space for native plants to return—supporting a healthier home for amphibians, birds, pollinators, and countless other species.

This isn’t just about removing a pesky plant—it’s about reclaiming the wild character of our local woodlands and reconnecting people to nature in a tangible, empowering way. Local conservation has ripple effects: improving biodiversity, water quality, and climate resilience right where we live.

Whether you're a seasoned restoration volunteer or just curious about how to get involved, this presentation will leave you inspired to take part in this growing movement of neighbors working together for nature. Let’s restore the woods—together.
